Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 10/23/19

DIAL H FOR HERO #8     DC COMICS

Unfortunately, Dial H slips a bit this time around. While still an interesting storyline with believable characters, Dial H appears to have picked up a case of that most dreaded of comic viruses, the over-complicating of a plot devise that suddenly have multiple versions of itself. Multiple colors of Green Lantern rings, multiple versions of the Speed Force, and now multiple versions of the H dial. And although I have been able to excuse it for the past few issues as it has taken a backseat over the past few issues, it takes center stage here and even surrounding it in nostalgia with multiple cameos of past Dial H characters and a “Whatever Happened to Gramps” segment, we’ve now got like 5 H dials. Sigh. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS #10     DC COMICS

Holy Giant Size! The Freedom Fighters have done it. Back up to fighting strength with the support of the American people, Uncle Sam is back up to Alex Ross proportions and whooping some bad guy tail. With the War Wheel down, Black Condor’s sacrifice to become a Plastic Man, and the Human Bomb and Doll Girl preparing to make the ultimate sacrifice, you know these last three issues are going to be epic. And did I mention Hitler III being the hell out of his dad and taking over the family buisness! Look out boys, Cyborg Overman is coming! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

FLASH #81     DC COMICS

Another title that has me on the fence. A lot is happening here and although I am a bit put off by yet another ultimate showdow in the Speed Force (whatever happened to the “once you go in you can’t get out” deal?) this one is entertaining and fills in some backstory. And then the “Next Big Thing” event hits and all hell breaks loose. And while again, next big things don’t impress me anymore, at least in this title, the effects are shown on a more personal level. All in all, some good storytelling even if it’s dealing with plot points I don’t agree with. However, modern versions be damned, will somebosy please get Captain Cold and Heat Wave back their guns! I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
