Doc’s Reviews for the Week of April 3, 2024

 REDCOAT #1     IMAGE COMICS

Ah, a character after my own heart! An immortal scoundral with a flare for the dramitic. And with his birth parents being Geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch, you know he’s worth it. And there is a certain pride knowing that he is part of the fully shared creator-owned Ghost Machine. The beginning of Simon Pure’s story are a wonderful combination of history, political conspiracies, and (sort of) time travel. Springing from the Geiger 80 Page Giant from a few months back, This one has real potential. And also introduces us to a young German lad by the name of Albert Einstein?! who is in need of his services. A splendid first issue and definitely worth the price of admission. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

ROOK EXODUS #1     IMAGE COMICS

The third of Image’s Ghost Machine shared universe titles is brought to us by another dynamic team of creators, namely Jason Fabok and Geoff Johns. Definitely not the Rook from the old Warren Publications, this nameless farmer has become a warden on the planet “F” with a helmet which allows him to control animal species. Description wise, it’s not all that appealling. But when you realize that planet “F” is on the verge of destrution in a year, things suddenly jump up a notch. And presenting the story in an art style that reminds me of the Dan Dare comics put out by Virgin in 2007, we go up another notch. And finally, not all of the control masks are worn by the good guys. A somewhat depressing tale of a world lost and a new world that is self-destructing after just 11 years. Big Buisness, mutated animals, and a few good people hoping to live make this an interesting narrative. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

GEIGER #1     IMAGE COMICS

Anybody else remember Image’s 2021 six issue series with more alternate covers than any one book should be allowed? The story of the man known as Joe Glow and the Meltdown Man has returned to jumpstart a new line under the Image logo. And he brought his original creative team of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank with him. The story reminds me a little of the old Atomic Knight stories from Strange Adventures with a little Doctor Phosphorus thrown in and a dash of Italian Western anti-hero. Geiger is the perfect starting point for this new Ghost Machine universe. And with new sidekick, Nate, the Nuclear Knight, the story seems to have a future. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
