Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 04/24/19

HEROES IN CRISIS #8     DC COMICS

That thudding noise you hear is the sound of my forehead bouncing off the wall over and over and over again! I was going to try to do a spoiler free version of this review but there’s only one issue left so I’m going for broke. Let me admit that I have never been a great fan of this mini-series. It breaks too many of my rules regarding comic storylines. No discernible starting point which gives a reason for the story. The bringing back of dozens of characters only to kill them immediately. The use of a never before revealed super power that was used to kill everyone. But even with all that stacked against it, I tried to be gentle in previous issues reviews as I hoped that something awesome would come out at the end. Instead, with only one issue left, I’m reading something that seems to be an unwanted homework assignment from the 1980’s Suicide Squad title that somebody just needed to get a C on to pass. So (SPOILER ALERT!!) it was a time travelling Wally West who accidently lost control of an unknown never before mentioned aspect of the Speed Force that ripped through the place and killed everyone. While we can all agree that DC has not made it easy on Wally West these past few years, this came as a real slap in the face. Because not only does he accidently kill everyone but then using his Uncle Barry’s knowledge of crime scene techniques lays out the place so that not even Batman nor Barry can figure it out. From a tragic character who’s family is lost to him forever to a manipulative conniving nut. With nowhere to go after this, there will be no redemption for anyone involved in this book. I give it a 3 out of 10 Grahams.

DIAL H FOR HERO #2     WONDER/DC COMICS

Ok, first issue was not a fluke! This is a book with a big wide potential! The true nature of the Thunderbolt Club is incredible. Miguel is definitely one of the best written character in 2019. And with two new heroes in the form of Jobu, the Zonkey King and Iron Deadhead it is painfully apparent that the crew at Dial H is having a great time. This title harkens me back to the good ole days. Sam Humphries, Joe Quinones, and Jordan Gibson must make up one hell of a bullpen! Read this book! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.

FREEDOM FIGHTERS #5     DC COMICS

The battle for Earth X continues. Uncle Sam is back but not at 100% yet. With the new Freedom Fighters covering his back, we get to see the return of another great World War II character in the destructive War Wheel! And if the War Wheel is back does that mean the Blackhawks are somewhere around?! However, Adolf Hitler the 2nd gives the order to release the greatest Nazi villain ever know, OverMan! With a nice flowing story and what seems to be a natural progression, I hope that Robert Venditti’s story will continue to focus in on the well established characters of the Quality Publishing Line and not lose it all to a Uncle Sam/OverMan beat down. I mean at some point it will have to happen but hopefully not at the expense of such characters as the Blue Tracer. This title is still holding a steady course. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
