Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 2/23/2022

AQUAMEN #1     DC COMICS

You know, Aquaman is one of those characters that DC has a long history of making bad decisions with and really not knowing what to do with. So it only makes sense to make two of them. One issue in and we still have Arthur Aquaman trying to teach Jackson and continuing to fail just like in the most recent mini-series. So nothing new there. Turns out that the Ocean Master learned nothing since Aquaman Volume 4, so nothing new there. Black Manta is still working both sides, ditto. We get a secret faction of strange Atlantian hybrids walking among humans, pretty sure I’ve been down that path. What is new is that these infiltrators start speaking in tongues, get pink eye and go on killing sprees. And with two Aquamans on duty, this should be a piece of cake (sarcasm!). Good news is that artist Sami Basri can draw one heck of a giant sea serpent! 5 out of 10 Grahams.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1054     DC COMICS

So part 8 and the shoot finally hits the fan. The Psycho Pirate loses it. The inmates break out of their trances and get back to business. The Bat Family is under attack on all sides. Nothing I haven’t been predicting since part 1. But I will give credit to Mariko Tamaki writing for keeping all the seperate factions moving in and out of each other’s scenes like an old school limbs. With at least 4 seperate groups interacting in the same story, Tamaki’s writing keeps them from stepping all over each other and moving smoothly. But in the end, what we have is that the inmates are in charges of the Asylum. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
