Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 10/06/2021

WONDER WOMAN 80TH ANNIVERSARY      DC COMICS

Another 100 Page Super Spectacular and another group of snippets featuring our favorite Amazon. And with such classic Wonder Woman collaborators as Steve Orlando, Mark Waid, Amy Reeder, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, and Evan “Doc” Shaner in the mix, you know this is a worth the read. While a little disappointed that more of the Golden Age days of Diana wasn’t explored, there were definate highlights. Appearances by the original version of Etta and the Holliday Girls, guest appearences by a Silver Age Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, a fun date between late 1960’s Clark Kent and the hip version of Diana, all act as a reminder of what the character of Wonder Woman has represented throughout our lifetimes. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

DEFENDERS #3     MARVEL COMICS

An amazing short initial storyline for a new series. Al Ewing and Javier Rodrigiguez’s story explores some pretty high brow concepts (Galactus’s Mom is a Defender?!) but manages to come full circle in it’s plot points. The unfortunate part is that this team of Defenders is such a hodge podge (it does have a purpose in the story though) that I can’t help but be reminded of the final days of the original Defenders series where the poor creative teams were expected to keep the title moving forward without any of it’s big hitters. And while I am a big fan of the Masked Rider, this seems like a poor place to stick him after all the hype of his initial appearance. An interesting take on Marvel’s Non-Team. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
