American Way Those Above and Those Below #1     VERTIGO COMICS

Writer John Ridley and Penciller Georges Jeanty return to bring us to a crossroads in the history of the American Way universe. The ideals of the 1940’s that brought about the creation of the Civil Defense Corps just barely survived into the 1960’s in the original 2006 series. 10 years have passed and the former members are finding themselves being forced into situations they do not want to be in. Ridley really manages to present the choices faced by people who lived through those turbulent times. A real thought provoker.

I give it a 7 out of 10.

Action Comics #983     DC COMICS

The Rebirth Superman Family crossover continues as the Battle Royale begins in earnest. With the heaviest of hitters representing the Revenge Squad, the Super family flies to Superman’s side. And while the story is ok, I have several problems. First, there is the cliché “All of my worst enemies together…” issue. While this setup keeps fanboys up at night with the endless possibilities, it seems to me to be overkill. No matter the clever ending, the unbeatable situation always seems to use up possibilities too quickly. Next, making Superman blind (and now possibly deaf) again seems like some fan boy trying to see just how bad can I make it for Superman. Like adding that third layer of icing on the cake to see just how sweet you can make it. Finally, the battle royale is short lived, unorganized and just shows how easily our heroes can be defeated. A rather depressing look at the Superman Family in all it’s complexity.

I give it a 5 out of 10.

Die Kitty Die! Hollywood or Bust! #2     CHAPTERHOUSE

The misadventures of Kitty in Hollywood continue with special guests the Carneys! Haven’t run into the Carneys since their 1994 one-shot special! Bringing back obscure characters seems to be a trademark of this series and I for one am amazed and delighted. With a flashback treat from an imaginary comic and a little adults only humor, this title continues to entertain and tantalize!

I give it an 8 out of 10
