Every October as the weather gets colder and we get nearer to Halloween, if you’re anything like me you start to gravitate towards the Horror comics. Something about that fall chill in the air that leads me in that direction. Lately Horror fans like myself have been a little spoiled. There are some truly great Horror comics that have either recently wrapped up or are still ongoing that I would highly recommend to scratch that spooky itch.
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees
Starting out with one of my most recent favorites. I like to describe this as Animal Crossing meets Dexter. You follow Samantha the local hardware store owner, who just so happens to be a serial killer. When another killer starts raising suspicion on her she must take action. A book that can be described as both cute and horrifying. This book has been wrapped up so you’ll be able to find it in a collected volume. Also look for the sequel “Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees Rites of Spring”, and the just released Halloween Special!
On release this book immediately caught my eye, having been a longtime fan of Adlard from his work on The Walking Dead I knew I had to give this a shot. What felt like an oil-soaked version of The Thing I was hooked from the jump. A woman who is on the run seeks shelter with her estranged grandmother in a quiet Texas town. Only to find her grandmother isn’t quite well, and something is strange about the oil. This is another series that has wrapped, with the final issue releasing on October 7th of this year. However, we still have most issues in stock on our website including #1!
Universal Monsters (published by Image Comics ANY OF THEM!)
Image Comics has been releasing the Universal Monster books in multiple mini-series. So far, I have been a big fan of the lot of them! From The Invisible Man to Phantom of the Opera and everything in between. Each on has been a wonderful retelling of monsters most of us grew up loving. My favorite being Blood of the Wolfman by Joshua Williamson, Leomacs, & Pip Martin. Each one has come out originally in color, followed by a square bound double issue black and white reprints which add even another level to that classic feel. Be on the lookout for Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 coming out Oct 28th!
Marvel’s Midnight (Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, X-Men)
I would be doing everyone a disservice if I didn’t at least mention the Midnight books from Marvel! I would recommend any one of these titles for any level of horror fan. Each one tackling a different horror genre. Fantastic Four feels like a Lovecraftian adventure akin to Even Horizon (one of my favorite Sci-Fi horror movies). Spider-Man takes on body horror. Where the spider doesn’t just give Peter Parker amazing abilities, but changes more than just fixed eyesight and super strength. X-Men has a more familiar take going back to vampires. However, I thought Matteo Della Fonte did an amazing job with the interiors, and with Jonathan Hickmans writing this is far more than just another X vamp story.
With the movie coming out, I just wanted to shout out this great book! As a big fan of Clayface, and someone who is excited about the upcoming I think this book is being slept on. Basil Karlo gets out of Arkham once again, only to find that he is already out… and he’s acting again… and people are missing… If you are a fan of body horror or things like The Blob this is worth checking out!
If you made it this far thanks for reading! Hope some of you come to Graham Cracker Comics Schaumburg to say hello! Have a wonderful October and Happy Halloween!
