VALENTINE BLUFFS MASSACRE IRON HEART #1 AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY
An interesting direction to take the franchise in. Or is it still part of the franchise since American Mythology changed the title to be able to explore more of the town and it’s characters? AS long as our killer still has a gas mask, a headlamp, and a pickax, this here is follow up material to 1981’s My Bloody Valentine as far as I am concerned. Due to rising lawsuits, insurance premiums, etc. the mining company has let go all of the orginal miners and is now employing robots. And yet, even though he has a few more high tech advantages, (the digital valentine poem was a nice touch), his pickaxe still swings tried and true. With a nice twist cliffhanger, which opens up many different pathes for this storyline to delve into. 1980’s horror fans rejoice, this is a well thought out sequel. 9 out of 10 Grahams.
BACK ISSUE MAGAZINE #170 TWOMORROWS PUBLISHING
It would be nearly impossible for Doc’s Corner to not review a look at some of the comic pages’ Doctors. And while quite a few are missing (Doc Savage, Dr. Fate, Doctor Occult, Dr. Sivana, Doc Wacky, Doctor Demonicus, Doctor Hypno, Doctor Stellar, oh for the love of Pete stop me!) But the staff has picked a wide ranging selection of doctors here. But even with these, there are some real stand outs. The Justice Society’s Dr. Mid-Nite (always loved that spelling!) Not only a practicing doctor who just happened to be blind, but quite the inventor. While everybody remembers his Blackout Bombs, who remembers his Cryotuber which fired heat or cold to stun a villains nervious system? Doctor Druid, who first appeared as Dr. Droom (?) in Amazing Adventures #1. Only to be brought back in Weird Wonder Tales #19 as Dr. Druid. Because A. Druids were rumored to have mystical powers and B. Dr. Dromm – Dr. Doom, it was going to get confusing. Researcher, investigator, mind manipulator, hero, villain, power mad despot, he did it all. He was like the perfect character. You could just turn him into whatever you needed for you story. And, of course, one of my most favorite doctors from my early teen years, Dr. Bong. Whatever you think about the original run of Howard the Duck, it was sooo much weirder. And there is no better proof than Dr. Bong’s backstory. Which I will not ruin here but I swear as a early teen, I actually thought the crazy bunny suit guy actual had his head cut off and had it replaced with the giant bell. Zoinks! Back Issue couldn’t have picked a better topic because, I’m pretty sure Dr. is the third most used character name after Man and Captain. 10 out of 10 Grahams.
