 AVENGERS ARMAGEDDON #1     MARVEL COMICS

An new Avengers title for people who have no idea who the Avengers are except for movies and video games! So much so that you get some sort of weird Magic the Gathering Card Marvel Style in the sealed comic bag. Bah! And while you might think that this all new and exciting, I’m going to rain on your parade. “Thunderbolt Ross/Red Hulk is still a total @$$. The government is still useless unless they are working to stop the heroes. Characters that weren’t Avengers in the first place fill the roster. Wolverine – an X-man, NOT an Avenger. The Invisible Woman and Mr. Fantastic – Fantastic Four, NOT Avengers. And after reviewing the promotional materials include here include the ‘trading’ card and the extra sheet telling me that Marvel Super Heroes will be available to play on MTG Arena on June 26th, the creative team seems to have been gathered (GET IT … GATHERED! HAH!) to create an ad for Marvel’s newest crossover. I knew this was going to be trouble for old school fans. I imagine if you play Magic, you are bouncing up and down in your chairs. If you are a classic Avengers fan, this is definitely a WTH moment. 2 out of 10 Grahams. (Please note that this version of Doc’s review was heavily censored for questionable language and violent outbursts.)

JAY&SILENT BOB JAYS OF FUTURE PAST #1 MARVEL COMICS

As much as I wanted to be reporting on a off the beaten path cash grab for Marvel by letting Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes pop into their universe and scooping up six bucks from every Clerks fan, I can’t. Kevin Smith writing talents are clearly firing on all thrusters. Touching moments interspersed with humor. Inside jokes, mocking of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the real reason the Doctor Doom must destroy the pair are all on display with a cheeky grin and the winking of an eye to the reader. The writer notes in the back of the book show that Smith is a big comic geek that was given to interact with his passion.   This one is all on the creative team but a shout out should be given to Marvel for putting it out on the newstands. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

DC FINEST TEAM-UPS THE IMPOSSIBLE ESCAPE TPB

You had me at Team-Ups! Plus a lot of these are from the 1970’s, right in my prime! And the best part was nduring this time frame, the creative team of Bob Haney and Jim Aparo really couldn’ give a rat’s behind about DC continunity which lead to all kinds of chaos that really didn’t bother us although it drove the experts insane. It was time when heroes could team-up with villains, with multiple characters, or both. Batman – Green Arrow – Two-Face, Batman – Wildcat – The Joker, Batman – Plastic Man – Metamorpho all showed up. And how about one of the very few multi-charecter team-ups with a total of five co-stars with Batman joining forces with The Atom, Green Arrow, The Joker, and Two-Face!  The Brave and the Bold title had really set a high bar. It was also a time of new title that filled their pages with reprints but did have some fresh material like The Creeper meeting Wildcat. Glorious times! 9 out of 10 Grahams.
