 GEIGER #21     IMAGE/GHOST MACHINE COMICS

Geoff Johns and Gary Frank prove once again that they know how to tell a story. With the Northerner by his side, Geiger is strapped into a tank (and it is a really cool tank!) and gets drawn into the mystery benefactors of the Northerner. And by the look of it, Redcoat will be joining the crew in the near future. This issue is a great example when proper planning and writers who are working on the long game really do their job. With more new secondary characters being introduced, we seem to be getting closer to figuring out that Unnamed timeline that has been appearing at the back of every issue. After 21 issues, I’m so glad I decided to risk it on issue #1. Great story, great mysteries, great art with a long life ahead of it. Seems like that’s what us comic readers want. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

 ACTION COMICS #1095     DC COMICS

It’s all about the writers this week as Mark Waid does a phenomenal job of retelling and expanding the classic tale of young Pete Ross discovering Superboy’s secret identity. With one stray bolt of lightning, the sahdowy Clark Kent pulls open his shirt and the secret is out. And because of it, Pete Ross’s life has gone sideways. Not because he knows but rather because he can’t understand why his best friend is keeping a secret from him. Typical teenage stuff. But the best part is Pete starts noticing things about Clark that he never thought of and begins to piece things together. And Clark being Clark doesn’t even realise he has these poker tells that give him away. But as the life lesson continues, Pete comes to the conclusion that he needs to be that Man in Havana that Clark needs to be able to do some of the awesome stuff he does as Superboy. Keeping to the source materials is what it’s all about. 8 out of 10 Grahams.

A NEW WAYBACK WEDNESDAY COMIC REVIEW!

ACTION COMICS #389     (JUNE 1970)     DC COMICS

Almost 56 years ago, that writer Leo Dorfman and penciller Curt Swan introduced us to the ‘Kid Who Struck Out Superman’ and just goes to show how creative the writing staff on such long ongoing series like Action Comics had to be. As well as entertaining, as the first page shows Superman being unable to give away autographed baseballs for charity while young Ronnie is making a fortune with his autographed baseballs. After trying multiple sports, the truth is finally revealed as Superman himself relates the facts of a potential alien invasion, by the Slurrans, that he halted by his strange sports activities. With an extra added adventure of the Legion of Super-Heroes (featuring Chemical King, one of my favorite members!) you’d think you had a perfect issue. But wait, there is more as the centerfold pages present a look at Superman’s Rogues Gallery! And features the Puzzler! This one really has it all. 10 out of 10 Grahams.
