Doc’s Guest Reviews for the Week of 7/20/2022

HAD A FEW FRIENDS POP IN WHILE REVIEWING AND DECIDED IT MIGHT BE A CHANCE FOR SOME FRESH PERSPECTIVE. SO I GIVE YOU THIS WEEK’S GUEST REVIEWS!

MANGA Z #1     ANTARCTIC PRESS (REVIEWED BY LILY S.)

Antarctic Press returns to it roots and starts out a new Manga title with ties to its old Mangazine title from back in the 1980’s. Beginning with 4 introduction takes by multiple creative teams. Jazz Doll starts out like a 1920’s scandalous tale about a flapper who also has superpowers. I really liked the art style used here although we only get a few pages of story, which seems a shame. There is very little story development here with only 5 pages. I also like the art on the second story of Foxy & Wolfy. A strange mingling of cat eared girls and demons as Foxy begins her journey to become a mage. Mostly a mix of standard Manga plot points. Our third tale deals with the character of the Immortal Red Fox who is straight out of the Power Rangers school. The art is very western oriented and in spots almost seems like it is meant for animation. It is the weakest of the four. Finally, we get a Legend of Zelda type story with more childlike cuteness in the art. It also needs to be read from right to left making it a bit confusing unless you are paying attention to the instructions. This one has more pages and developes the story better. Of the four, this one, the Adventures of Lenifille is my favorite. Overall I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

GODZILLA VS MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGER #4     IDW COMICS

(Reviewed by Sly Hondo) Cullen Bunn’s story continues to progress and it is getting better. With the addition of more monsters and Kaiju, the story is expanding and developing. The art style seems to favor the Power Ranger characters although we do have a few examples of Godzilla and King Ghidirah that are eye catching.  Even though Godzilla takes top billing on the cover, there is no doubt that this is a Power Rangers title with Godzilla guest starring. Not as good as some of IDW’s previous Godzilla titles. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
