Doc’s Reviews For The Week of 2/10/2021

February 10, 2021 Docs Corner, Reviews

Dan Abnett’s story continues to be entertaining and shows his command of the characters. Jonathan Lau shows that whether it be science heroes or barbarian redheads, his art works no matter what the subject. Although his take on Red Sonja makes her appear younger than I am used to. And while I can’t deny that the overall theme of the book  is right up my alley, I can’t help but wonder if the idea shouldn’t have been reversed. Create a “The Superpowers” title and have Red Sonja guest. Focasing more on the Project characters. Still, I heartily recommend this one. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

A nicely done one-shot featuring Marvel’s favorite living vampire in his original version including underarm glider wings and cheesy goatee! Writer Ralph Macchio clearly understands the emotional undercurrents in the early tales and presents them here. And in a sort of Marvel version of the Dark Universal Movie franchise, its living vampire versus the evil of Mr. Hyde! The pathos is shown in multiple levels throughout this tale. And Tom Reilly’s Daredevil-like presentation of the art really works well. And although this is simply a one-shot it has all the hallmarks of an excellent series incorporating the classic horror characters of the Marvel Universe. It is a shame that the blue and red one-piece jumpsuit will be erased from continuity once the Marvel movie hits the screens, but I for one am glad to see this character back in a strong story. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
