Doc’s Review’s For The Week Of 10/20/2020

TRUE BELIEVERS BLACK WIDOW & THE AVENGERS #1     MARVEL COMICS

This is the book that made me fall in love with the Scarlet Witch! And what young man wouldn’t after opening the cover to see her lovingly drawn by Don Heck, mind controlled dancing to the whims of Magneto! Even the collected grouping of Avengers and X-Men in the backround made no difference. This was Wanda’s page! Steve Engelhart seamlessly weaves a tale featuring so many guest heroes that you would think it impossible. But it all works wonderfully! This is definately an issue worth revisiting! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT #1     MARVEL COMICS

The concept of the Werewolf By Night has never really worked since it’s initial run in the 1970’s. The tragic character of Jack Russell has been replaced, updated, etc. but the success has never been duplicated. And while Taboo & B. Earl give it their best shot, it still falls a bit short. While I believe the Native American Jake gives a interesting starting point, the classic rules of Lycanthropy are out the window and Jake is more superhero than monster. There is no real curse or uncontrolable changes into the wolf. And while I can appreciate the inclusion of the hero Red Wolf, I cannot forgive the addition of cybernetic were-creatures. And while Scot Eaton’s artwork is well done, the werewolf looks like a cross between a He-Man action figure and one of the characters from the Twilight movies. Not you classic Larry Talbot wolfman … Uggg! Hulk got hairy. I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.
