Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 9/9/2020

RISE OF ULTRAMAN #1     MARVEL COMICS

This book has a little bit of everything for the Ultraman fan. Writers Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom obviously did their homework in researching the 1966 original series. And trust me cause I was watching it on a static-filled Channel 50 (or was it Channel 44 or Channel 66?) on my Grandfather’s tv. Although this has a more modern take on the characters, the general plot remains the same with slight tweeks. Man and alien meet in the midst of a crisis and become one to battle the evil. Classic story spiced up by Francesco Manna’s art! With some backup stories featuring Michael Cho and Gurihiru art in them, this title also gives a shout out to some of the more current versions of the hero. But let’s be honest here, the scene stealer has to be the Alex Ross cover which gets it SOOO right that you can even seen the creases in the rubber suit! Good stuff! I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

HAWKMAN #27     DC COMICS

There can be no doubting that writer Robert Venditti knows his Golden Age style! The dialog between the members of the Justice Society and the jaw-dropping battle scenes featuring Fernando Pasarin’s art warm the hearts of JSA fans world-wide! It is so good that I am willing to by pass a few questions that I have. Questions like why are Carter and Shiera are doing a Quantum Leap deal with the readers seeing them in their current costumes but when they look in the mirror, they are in their Golden Age gear? Why are they getting a redo in the Golden Age, that’s not really a traditional reincarnation? Truth is I don’t care! Hit the Gambler again, Sandman! This one’s a real treat! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
