Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 2/26/2020

FORCE WORKS 2020 #1     MARVEL COMICS

I’m not really impressed by the amalgamation of old title and characters trying to intregrate with a Next Big Event story. With the events of this year’s AI uprising event in it’s beginning stages, Matthew Rosenberg and Juanan Ramirez have been charged with merging Daisy from the Agents of SHIELD with War Machine from the comics, US Agent (the Captain America who’s a jerk), and Hawkeye’s former wife Mockingbird. Unfortunately, none of these characters have much pizazz and are all rather unlikeable. Now, pit them against a jungle full of Deathloks (the original Deathlok was cool, a jungle full of them has a certain Walking Dead feel to them) is just ridiculous. Which the writer seems to realise as the team is almost immediately overwhelmed and defeated. Even cameos by Solo and Gauntlet can’t seem to help but they are smart enough to get wounded within a page or two and quit the team. Nothing here to get your hooks into.  I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.

DISNEY’S THE LITTLE MERMAID #1     DARK HORSE COMICS

The classic retelling of one of Disney’s main Princesses comes to a close. Evil is defeated, the Prince gets the girl and Sebastian leads the band. With Zulema Scotto Lavina’s Disney grade art, this is worth revisiting. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

LAUREL & HARDY MEET THE THREE STOOGES #1     AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY

Finally, Laurel & Hardy are back in comic form and what better way than with a team up with our favorite Stooges! The last time I got a good look at the comedy duo was back at DC in the 1970’s. And although I never did get that 64 special, DC ads showed me, this worked out better! Wacky, zany comedy filled with pathos as both comedy teams work their magic back and forth with a wonderful equal balance. SA Check and James Kuhoric charm us with a story that spotlights all the characters. Definately worth the price of admission! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
