Doc’s Reviews for the Week of January 29, 2020

A

FRANKENSTEIN UNDONE #1     DARK HORSE COMICS

Mike Mignola has taken an interesting turn by trying to combine his version of the Frankenstein Monster with the classic version. Picking up with the death of Victor on the icy tundra, the Monster starts to be gather clues to his future. While a bit philosophical, the story is interesting and provides some insight into the Monster’s thinking. Best of all, it provides a reason for people to call the Moster, Frankenstein. Classic Mignola work with help from Scott Allie and Ben Stenbeck.  I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

AIRBOY #51     iT’S ALIVE PUBLISHING

Hey look, somebody gets it! A new series that picks up not only the storyline but the numbering system! Simply amazing! Chuck Dixon brings Davy back to the world of the living without a long drawn out flashback. Dixon hints that the tale will be told in the future but for now, the Airboy family is starting to reform. More for the fans of Airboy but still enough to get the casual reader interested. Plus, with all the talented help on variant covers and pinups, you gotta love it. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #39     DC COMICS

WHAT THE ….! Really?! This is how we are going to end one of the most drawn out stories of recent history. As I have always suspected, Mankind sucks and deserves everything it gets. Makes me wonder if that’s how the Third World ended and started up Kirby’s Fourth World? Did the main heroes just give up and move on? No final sacrifice, no explosive rebirths, no showing snippets of the multiverse? I call cop out on this one. I give this a 3 out of 10 Grahams.
