Doc’s Reviews for the Week of September 18, 2019

FLASH FORWARD #1     DC COMICS

Wow! Vindication for Wally West already? I still haven’t gotten over the collassal waste of time Heroes In Crisis. Issue 1 is not off to a good start as we get page after page of Wally’s pity party and that someone will grant him a sweet release from life. Blah, blah, blah. Meanwhile, the Multiverse (and again I rage that if it’s a Multiverse it cannot be restricted to 52!) is still going all blobby dark from the Dark Multiverse I I really can’t tell you how I have grown to hate that term over the past several monthes. And so the weird alien Multiverse protector alien from Sideways decides that Wally is our best hope. It’s only saving grace is that perhaps the next 5 issues will give us a look at parts of the Multiverse. But I can’t help but see a similarity in Wally West taking over the role of Pariah in the Crisis On Infinate Earths mini-series. Travelling from Earth to Earth to watch it’s destruction. I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.

INFERIOR 5 #1     DC COMICS

On the fence about this one. Mostly due to the fact that I was a huge fan of the original Inferior 5 title back in the 1960’s-70’s. Unfortunately, except for a Dumb Bunny reference, this isn’t what I had hoped for. There can be NO doubt that this is a Keith Giffen/Jeff Lemire book! And that is not a bad thing. However it is set directly after the time of DC’s Invasion story arc which is one of those early company crossovers that is best left buried in the sands of time. As with all Giffon/Lemire books, this one starts of confusing and a bit off center. This book reminds me of a cross between some of the classic 1st Issue Special titles (like Dingbats of Danger Street, the Outsiders, Atlas, and the Green Team) that only lasted 1 issue. Weird and unconventional, this one defies description.  I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

HISTORY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #3     MARVEL COMICS

And thus the well known Marvel Universe starts in issue three. All the classic tales are quickly reviewed here. From the startings of such heroes as the Fantastic Four, Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, and the X-men, we blast through time. Marriages, births, deaths, changes all in the briefest of a moment. Get a crash course in the beginnings of your favorite current heroes. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

SUPERMAN #15     DC COMICS

THEIR BAAAAACK! And while the costumes are different and the looks are off, I can’t help but find a sort of joy in the return of the future’s coolest group of teens. This whole issue is a celebration of the best DC has to offer. While elsewhere the Multiverse is still bouncing back and forth in darkness, the United Planets is born and is portrayed wonderfully. This is definately a high point in DC’s output lately.  I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
