Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 6/12/2019

EVENT LEVIATHAN #1     DC COMICS

Another spin off of this months (sarcasm) Next Big Thing, the main upnote of this 1st issue is the inclusion of Lois Lane. The cover reads “greatest detectives hunt…” and someone took the time to realize that Lois Lane belongs in that grouping. (I can hear the skeptics scream that she couldn’t figure out the whole Clark Kent thing!) In the beginning, Lois was much more than a damsel for Superman to save and in more recent years her talents are starting to be brought out. Last man standing Steve Trevor ends up trading theories with Batman, Green Arrow, and the Question before getting loopy and losing it. With the clock ticking, Lois and Batman must call in the detectives of the DC Universe for help. But can it all be figured out in 6 issues? Hoping for more but still willing to check out issue #2.  I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.

FLASH #72     DC COMICS

Really on the fence about this one. The idea of reusing the Year One concept does not especially appeal but the return of the Turtle is a reminder of the days of simplistic villains and what made the Flash Rogues the most loved. Even if we had to incorporate the Turtle’s lack of speed into a mutant power and not inventive gadgets. The beginnings of the Barry Allen/Iris West romance is cute and an impressive update. Throw in the early beginnings of Captain Cold and we start moving the story in a good direction. Over all, Williams and Porter story has some good points but I have to ask the question, why is it needed. All the years of restarts gives me a twitch. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

JUGHEAD’S TIME POLICE #1     ARCHIE COMICS

Cudos to anyone who realized that this title actually existed in 1990 and lasted for 6 issues. It’s still hard to read as the more realistic tone of the Riverdale Archie gang interacts with the general wackiness of the original in general plot. Here we have a thought bubble speaking Hot Dog and in all honesty the concept feels out of place. But with Archie and Jughead screwing up their first trip in time, everything is unravelling. While I like the idea of bringing time travel back, I’m not sure if it’s going to mesh well with the new fresh Archie gang. I remain on the fence on this one. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
