JUNGLE COMICS #1      ANTARCTIC PRESS

Antarctic Press again goes for the gold! And when I say gold I of course mean the Golden Age! Once again stepping into the Wayback machine and introducing new readers to the classic title of Jungle Comics. This new version’s stories reintroduce us to the jungle lord, Kaanga and it is apparent that writer Chuck Dixon knows his was around the jungle. And with Kelsey Shannon’s unique artwork, the beauty and danger of the jungle seem to be given an upgrade. The story reads like something from the original series with a few minor points revealing the fact that this was written today. Add in a little back up with Shanna, the Firehair with a surprise guest star and you’ve got the rebirth of another title from yesteryear! And check out those coming soon title! Paint this old comic reader ecstatic! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.

DEFENDERS MARVEL FEATURE #1     MARVEL COMICS

In what has to be one of the coolest and most innovative creation stories in the real world of comics, with vunderkinden Roy Thomas and God rest his soul, Stan Lee at the center of it, the Defenders were created. Bouncing between issues of Doctor Strange, Sub-Mariner, Incredible Hulk, and Silver Surfer, the group finally gathered in the newly created title Marvel Feature! The original title would last 12 issues with the first 3 issues featuring the new group. Ironicly, after a few issues with Ant-Man, the title acted as the tryout for another incredible successful Marvel book, Marvel Two-In-One featuring team-ups with the Thing! But nevertheless, the origin of the Defenders is incredible enjoyable and rare as the three main characters didn’t want to be there. One of the most charming parts of the original Defenders was that the group was forced to work together rather than come together like the Avengers. Not only do you get to see the beginnings of the group but we get a look at the Sub-Mariner’s and Doctor Strange’s pasts in added bonus stories. This one brought back a lot of good memories as I was honored to have been alive and reading these comics as a kid. I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
