Doc’s Reviews for the Week of March 19, 2019

AVENGERS NO ROAD HOME #6     MARVEL COMICS

As if it wasn’t enough to have Marvel flooding the stands with new Conan titles, we now have an Avengers/Conan crossover. First thing that comes to mind is unnecessary. And you can watch me scream to high heaven if Conan becomes an Avenger after this. The recent history of the Avengers has been slip shot at best and this title is not making things better. The story is a bit confusing but this issue’s travel log quality works better visually. But the bottom line still comes down to questions like … Do we need a weekly Avengers title? Did Conan really need to be here? and Will Marvel ever be able to figure out how to find a happy medium between their cinematic universe and their comic universes?  I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.

SPIDER MAN LIFE STORY #1     MARVEL COMICS

I congratulate Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley for this unique look at Spider Man. Carefully weaving a tale involving the Marvel universe and the Viet Nam war, this series has an adult vision that is sorely lacking in today’s comics. Plus we get a nostalgic look back at some of the supporting characters from the original Spider-Man issues. A strong entry on the Marvel side of the comic racks. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

ATHENA VOLTAIRE #8     ACTION LAB

The big storyline finale proves to be a huge homage to a certain movie that involves a mystic ritual, Nazi soul sucking spirits and a questionable ending. While not the strongest part of the story, it does leave us with a recognizable ending even if you do recognize it. It will be interesting to see what direction the series goes in. An interesting character that goes sadly under the radar. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
