Doc’s Reviews With Only 14 More Days Until X-Mas

THE BEST DEFENSE DOCTOR STRANGE #1     MARVEL COMICS

I had been hoping that the new origin of the Defenders would grow less confusing as the mini-series continued but I was sorely mistaken. While I finally got that this part of the story was told in a flash forward, it didn’t really help the overall story line explanation. Instead, I get another appearance of the hooded stabber and the new menace(?) of some sort of train. Oh yeah, did I mention the severed Hulk’s head that feeds on magic?  I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.

THE BEST DEFENSE THE SILVER SURFER #1

A bit of a flashback as the Silver Surfer is back at his old job at the side of Galactus. The problem here is that none of the characters are truly likable. Again, this one-shot does very little in the way of the overall Defender’s story-line. I actually cheered when Galactus started destroying the planet. Maybe with the big man fed, Norrid can take some time off to explain exactly what the heck is going on.  I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.

FANTASTIC FOUR WEDDING SPECIAL #1     MARVEL COMICS

With Ben and Alicia posed to take to the alter, the Marvel Street Gang take to the pages and deliver a delightful bit of pre-wedding fun for us all. From Alicia’s Bachelorette Party, to the tragedy of the Mole Man, and the Latverian(!)limo driver all act as a reminder of the aspects of love. Plus the Ben Grimm back up feature is one of pure respect. Specials don’t come any better. I give it a 10 out of 10.

NEW TALENT SHOWCASE #1 2018     DC COMICS

After hosting the 24 Hour Comic Day Challenge for the past 10 years, I seem to be always looking out for the next generation of talent. And the batch that came out of the Development Workshops this year are amazing. The Hellblazer story brings us back to a time early on the original series in tone and attitude. And Zatanna’s story is well crafted with a Twilight Zone ending that would have made Rod Serling proud! I give it a 8 out of 10 Grahams.

WALT DISNEY’S COMICS #2 (or #745)     IDW PUBLICATIONS

Nothing cleans the pallet more than some good ole fashion hi-jinx from Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. Especially if they find themselves checking out some real honest to goodness ghosts. More classic tales with everyone’s favorite friends. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
