Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 11/21/18

BETTIE PAGE #1     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Everyone’s favorite pin up queen is back, (guys I’ve really got to quit saying that could you just give her a regular series and be done with this nonsense.) And David Avallone continues to show Bettie as a woman of the world who knows how to take care of herself. With a change of scenery to Great Britain and some help from the PM, this story line seems to be holding up the standards set up by the title’s previous incarnation. And Julius Ohta manages to make Bettie look amazing while keeping her in normal clothes.  I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams.

GO-BOTS #1     IDW COMICS

After the Shogun Warriors and just prior to the Transformers, came their bastard cousins, the Go-Bots. Often jokingly referred to as the poor man’s Transformers, these unfortunate AI giant robots have long been the but of jokes years. And while there can be no comparison between the toy lines, writer/artist Tom Scioli manages to do the impossible. His simple story and unique art style give me a title that’s hip to be square. The whole book screams 1960’s Charlton Comics and causes one to flashback to the good ole days. It kind of makes you forget that Leader-1 only had like 4 moving parts and that once you lost one of Cy-Kill’s wheel, you were basicly SOL. The best part of Scioli’s work here is that he doesn’t apologize or try to bedazzle the original characters. The characters remain mediocre because that’s what they are. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

ENCOUNTER #8      CARACEL COMICS

Confusing and a whole lot of fun, the mystery of Champion is finally solved but not without a whole lot of shennaigans from Barko. With the killer creative team of Baltazar, Franco, and Giarrusso, this has been a strong on-going series since the get go. Definitely worth keeping your eyes out or even better yet asking your local retailer to order you a copy now. Fun for everyone!  I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

CONSPIRACY THE ILLUMINATI #1     ZENESCOPE COMICS

A new title from our friends at Zenescope which keep outside of the usual realms. How far would a group go to keep control of the hearts and minds of the general population? Issue #1 gives us a look at the complex workings of a group trying to do just that and just how complicated it does get. This is definately is a thinking person’s comic. You’ll need to read it through it at least 3 times. Complex, heartless, and mysterious. I give it a 7 out of 10.
