Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 10/3/18

RAINBOW BRITE #1     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Another 80’s icon returns to us in an updated version. Backstory and full access to the world of Rainbow Brite are what this initial issue are all about. The cutsie Cabbage Patch cuteness from the 80’s is gone and replaced by girls who sigh infuriatingly every time a parent imposes a rule or sets a curfew. Even the fluffiness of Twinkle is replaced by a version that would fit in with the cast of Regular Show. The point here is that this is not the sugary sweet version of days gone by but it is a title I can recommend to younger girls. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

PELLUCIDAR #1     AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY PRODUCTIONS

The continuing saga of the worlds of Burroughs literary works just goes to show how complicated his stories really world. With portals to other worlds opening, the lost adventures of the Lost World are really in trouble as it seems like everyone wants them dead. With Cyrus Mesarcia’s beautiful scenery and Mike Wolfer’s take on all the plot points, this is a series worth keeping up with. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT! #1     ZENESCOPE ENTERTAINMENT

With a clever wrap around that reminds me of DC’s Space Museum stories, Dad and son take a walk around the universe of Robert Ripley. But the best part of this title is the new versions of Ripley’s classic cartoons. Definitely worth the price of admission. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

WAR BEARS #2     DARK HORSE COMICS

This title holds up after a magnificent start. Margaret Atwood’s story is a spot-on representation of the Golden Age of the world of comics. The especially depressing cliffhanger is an amazing reminder of how the earlier days of comics were not all that steady or secure. Our hero has quickly discovered that the life of the comic artist may not be worth it. With snippets of Al’s actual Oursonette comic, this is a touching look back. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

WONDER WOMAN BLANK COMIC #1     DC COMICS

Along with it’s sister blank comics (Superman & Batman) these titles are filled with amazing possibilities from the writers and artwork that is overflowing with future possibilities! But that is because these title will be drawn by you and others like you! White empty pages waiting to be filled up by your talents and imaginations. And I can say that because being the host for numerous years of the 24 Comic Day Challenge, I’ve gotten the opportunity to see it happen for real! Don’t forget to scoop up your copy and join us at the Andersonville location this Saturday from 10am to 10am on Sunday! These get a 10+ Grahams!
