Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 9/25/18 – Graham Crackers Comics

Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 9/25/18

SCOOBY DOO TEAM UP #42

Sholly Fisch and Dario Brizuela have done it again as they revisit the glory day of DC Comics when every cover had to have a gorilla! Scooby and the gang face off against the villainous ape inhabitants of the DC Universe. The Gorilla Boss from Batman, the Ultra-Humanite from the JSA, etc. And they are joined by Detective Chimp, Sam Simeon, and even a cameo by Beppo the Super-Monkey. Nostalgic, clever, and wall to wall characters! This title should be winning awards. I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.

HEROES IN CRISIS #1     DC COMICS

Confusing, brutal, with a level of adult reading that makes this hard to get through. Some of the deaths are amazing and somewhat shocking. This issue does what it was set out to do. Wet your appetite with questions. Why were all these heroes killed? Who did it? Why are the big three not going off the deep end? I suspect more questions will arise before the answers come out. But definitely a thought provoking start. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

STAR TREK VS TRANSFORMERS #1     IDW COMICS

It’s as if someone sat my younger brother and I down at a table and picked our brains. My brother is a huge Transformers fan and had all the toys. And I can still hear the stock music from the old Star Trek cartoon in my ears as I read this. What’s even more amazing is that Philip Murphy’s art almost looks like cel animation straight from the Filmation vaults. This is an incredible gift to children of the 70’s and the 80’s! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

MIKE HAMMER #4     TITAN COMICS

It’s a no-holds barred event as we reach the conclusion to this Mike Hammer story. And as only Max Allan Collins can do, the ending is as tragic and brutal as only Mickey Spillane could have done. Shame about the poor hat check girl. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

DOCTOR WHO 13TH DOCTOR #0     TITAN BOOKS

Oh my Giddy Aunt! Getting past the whole, the Doctor’s a girl? argument, this #0 special is flat out extra-ordinary. Titan spotlights all the Doctors with a great big jumble of artists and writers that will have your jaw hitting the floor. It also proves that Titan needs to take up the call to get more of the Doctors into their own titles. Imagine a First Doctor title drawn in the style of the TV Times cartoons of the 1960’s. Or early untold tales of the 2nd Doctor’s adventures with Ben and Polly. This is terrific proof of what could be. I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
