Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 9/5/18

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #2     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Rob Williams and Sergio Davila continue their good work with our Golden Age heroes. This time around the whole gang is here as the Black Terror, Samson, the Scarab, and  Masquerade join in the fight. The only problem I have is the questionable origin of the villains. Alien invaders? Ancient evil? Alien invaders pretending to be an ancient evil? Who knows but the action is just starting as the Earth is under attack and the heroes are already starting to fall. Classic storytelling with classic heroes. What more can you ask for? I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

NANCY IN HELL #2     AMIGO COMICS

What amazes me about this quiet little “flying under the radar” title is the big money questions and theories that it is tackling. Creators El Torres and Juan Jose Ryp definitely know their way around theoretical religion and aren’t afraid to use it. This story is so much more than a hot girl wit a chainsaw in Hell. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

DOLLMAN KILLS THE FULL MOON UNIVERSE #2      FULL MOON COMICS

More good natured fun and excitement at the hands of Full Moon’s pint size future detective. And while Shawn Gabborin’s tale of the Puppet Master puppets is well thought out and inventive, the backup story featuring Castle Freak seems like it was too short. Made to fill a few extra pages with just a good ole shoot’em up action sequence. It needed more but didn’t have the space. Still worth it, especially if your a Full Moon Movie Fan. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

WARBEARS #1     DARK HORSE COMICS

Ah, the good old days! Answering ads for artists in comics. Sitting in a room filled with other artists struggling to meet deadlines. Trying to develop your own characters while being forced to draw whatever you were handed. Margaret Atwood’s look back at the world of Canadian comics during WWII is simply amazing and wonderfully on target. And with Ken Steacy’s art style harkening back to those Canadian comics like Nelvana and Cyclone. And family life for our young artist is more true to life than we want to admit to.  I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.

COVER #1     DC COMICS

Ok, I’ll admit it. Sometimes that Brian Michael Bendis is a genius. And in teaming up with David Mack, this is an amazing story. And Mack’s unique art style add to the mystery and intrigue. Trust me when I say that weird things can happen at a comic convention but poor Max has no idea what he’s about to get involved in. From the scenes at the comic shows to the uneasy dinner with a fan, the story is very true to life. I give a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
