Doc’s Reviews for the Week of July 4th (Happy 4th of July!)

MY HERO ACADEMIA VIGILANTES VOL. 1     SHONEN JUMP

Fans of the anime show rejoice! After being forced to sit through Season 2 by my daughter, I can say that the story and art here are spot on and keep the personalities and plots in line. In all honesty, the concept of a world where hundreds of people develop super powers (called “quirks” here) and schools and mentor programs are set up is interesting and in certain cases thought provoking. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

ELVIRA MISTRESS OF THE DARK #1     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Being a big fan of the Claypool run of Elvira comics in the early 90’s, I muttered to myself “please don’t suck, please don’t suck” as I hesitated to open the cover to begin reading. Luckily, it does not. Artist Dave Acosta has a real knack for drawing the Mistress of the Dark. And writer David Avallone update the wraparound story from backstage on her TV show to backstage at her movie. Add in a mysterious paranormal coffin that teleports people in time and you’ve got a recipe for a winner. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

PROJECT SUPERPOWERS #0      DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Dynamite brings back everyone’s favorite Golden Age heroes with an all new storyline. The Green Lama has been contacted by the bodiless Death-Defying Devil with a message of future doom. The idea of bringing the Golden Age heroes into the modern age has some interesting plot points that I look forward to see unfold. And what’s more we get this first sweet taste at a price that fits all our pocket books. I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams.

INCOGNEGRO RENAISSANCE #5     BERGER BOOKS

Mat Johnson’s epic tale hits its big finale! This little gem has been flying under everyone’s radar since issue #1. This is a great noir book worthy of Black Mask magazine. Hoping that the characters get a chance to return in a future volume. This was a wonderfully thought out and illustrated tale. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

BATMAN #50     DC COMICS

Visually incredible with guest artist after guest artist showing off, but the ending is a total bummer and in my opinion, a cheat. After all this hype, and ads, etc. I feel cheated and suckered. And while I would love to dig in and start pointing my finger but no spoilers. Just read it and let me know if you feel cheated too. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
