Doc’s Reviews for the Week of May 16, 2018

SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1     DC COMICS

While a well done story, I was hoping for more. The tale of Superman and Superson returning to save Captain Storm of the Losers from Dinosaur Island is definitely up my alley. The concept here would have made great two-parter in the DC Presents title back in the day. Unfortunately, a lot of backstory is left up to the reader to go back and read older issues of Superman. Another problem is that the main story is cut short by the addition of two shorter tales. Both of them are interesting in their own right but there is no relatability between the stories. Several plot points seem to be left hanging on purpose and while I appreciate the need to set up future plot points, I’m annoyed that it has to be done via an oversized special and not in the regular title. However, with all my nitpicking, this still was a great read and gave some closure to those classic war stories of the 60’s and 70’s. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

NEW CHALLENGERS #1     DC COMICS

Finally a New Age of Heroes title worth it’s name. While I am still confused by the wole Metal deal, I do know that my favorite non-super group of heroes is back again. With some new twists and turns (along with a splash of the old Secret Six title and hourglass tattoos that actually act as a reminder that you are living on “borrowed time”) this new title shows some promise. I applaud the comeback! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

BUBBA HO-TEP AND THE COSMIC BLOODSUCKERS #1     IDW

IDW strikes gold again with what could have been a disaster. Prequels never do well at the box office and a comic version of something that never even made it to film is a definite risk. Joshua Jabcuga’s story is spot on with it’s cinemastic follow up. and Tadd Galusha’s art is perfect for the subject matter. Secondary characters fill the empty space left by JFK’s presence in the movie. For fan’s of the movie or for just someone looking for something new, this title will do the job.  I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.

FLAVOR #1     IMAGE COMICS

Keatinge and Jin Clark’s independent title proves that it is thinking outside the box. A cross between the Food Network, Anime, and Ratatouille, that rat chef movie, Flavor is definitely like nothing I’ve seen before. This is a universe where cheating in the fight for fresh ingredients can get you killed and running a restaurant with an unlicensed chef can get you closed down forever. It’s as if the world is being overseen by a sort of perverse medieval Gordon Ramsey. This one has enough going for it to appeal to multiple groups of people. Worth checking out. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

STILL GOING STRONG AND WORTH PICKING UP A COPY …

ENCOUNTER #3     CUB HOUSE

The grouping of Baltazar, Franco, and Giarrusso is still riding the top of a wave that shows no sign of cresting. With a new member of the rogues gallery and a How to Draw page this is a book for all ages. Providing us with some good clean fun! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

ATHENA VOLTAIRE 2018 ONGOING #4     ACTION LAB

Her first new story arc comes down to it’s nail biting conclusions! Steve Bryant’s character proves once again why she deserves an ongoing title. The big finally gets us Nazis, Djinns, and solved mysteries under the floors of museums. Lets hope that the new storyline in issue #5, keeps us on the steady path. Just don’t call her Lara Croft (She really hates that)! I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
