MIGHTY THOR #705 MARVEL COMICS
While I fully admit that I have never been a big fan of this incarnation of Thor, I will give this title proper credit. It delivered exactly what it promised. No redemption, no second chances, no do-overs, no last minute cures. The cancer that affects all of us in one form or another in our real lives takes the life of Jane Foster. That’s all there is. Sure, she saves the universe, she saves Odin, Freyja, and Odinson, she looks the Mangog straight in his face and reminds him that it was a mortal named Jane that defeated him. Hell, she even gets that final kiss. But in the end, it is the frail, hairless body of Jane Foster that we are left with. Originally named Jane Nelson in her first two appearances in September of 1962, she has been a part of the Thor mythos since day one. This one was brutal. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
BATMAN #43 DC COMICS
The Bat and the Cat versus the World! Tom King’s script is amazingly tender and soft spoken. Reinforcing several Batman canon points such as the friendship between Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman and the idea that many of the Bat-villain family are not so much evil but broken and in need of understanding. A more sedate Batman and a more loyal Catwoman are exactly what are needed here. And with the variety of artists on display here, this is a visual cornucopia. A wonderful way to end the currently storyline in time for the wedding. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
CAVE CARSON HAS AN INTERSTELLAR EYE #1 DC COMICS
More of the psychedelic adventures of our beloved 1960’s adventurer and his team. This series sets it’s guideposts from the original. Cave has lived a very long time and has witnessed many tragedies and still is. As the story picks up, Cave is on hand to provide one last adventure for his old friend Star Adam before he dies.And if that wasn’t depressing enough, we get part one of a Cave Carson podcast which asks the question, What ever happened to the original Mighty Mole team? This one hits a little too close to home. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
LAND THAT TIME FORGOT SEE-TA THE SAVAGE #1 AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY
(NOT FINAL COVER) Growing up reading the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs, I was enchanted by the worlds he presented to me. Lands where time and space had completely different meanings and dinosaurs still existed. Mike Wolfer’s look at See-Ta is a wonderfully informative look at the details of the Land That Time Forgot. Rules of the land, the interactions between evolutionary levels, and what brought about the legend of See-Ta are all explored here. And his art is spectacular. And all incredibly colored in shades of blue and green by Ceci De La Cruz. Who uses light sources and shadows for maximum effect. This title always reminds us that if not for these stories, there would be no Jurassic Park franchise. Read the inspiration, it’s totally worth it. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
