Doc’s Reviews for 8/15/17

Sandman Special #1     DC COMICS

An all-star celebrity cast work magic in reviving the tales of the guardian of dreams. The stories presented here are wonderful remembrances of the comics we read in our youth. The true test of the Kirby fan is the amazing amount of cameos in Dan Jurgens and Jon Bogdanove’s “King of Dreams” Oh sure, you’ll guess the ending but who cares! Plus … “Goody” Rickles?! I have to give this a 10 out of 10!

Sheena, Queen of the Jungle #0     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

While I know better to expect a lot from a .25 cent comic these days, I did get my money’s worth from Dynamite’s newest Sheena series. Bennett and Trujillo’s dialog presents us with a more primitive Sheena. One that hasn’t been involved with the modern world. It is both charming and scene-setting. Moritat’s art is a delightful cross between “Good Girl” art and the animated work from MTV’s show, the Maxx. And Szymanowicz’s does amazing things with the color green. With an ending which made me laugh, this series seems to be off to a good start. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Street Fighter vs Darkstalkers #4     Udon Comics

More explanations! More battles! More of your favorite video game characters including that Morrigan, woof! Udon Comics continues to bring these characters to the comic page in there epic pseudo-anime style art. But who are we kidding, we grabbed this one for Rob Porter’s Babes of Video Games cover B!. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Normandy Gold #3     Titan Comics

While definitely an adult book addressing adult issues, Normandy Gold continues to be a hidden treasure on the comic shelves. If you are a Pulp fan, a detective fan, or a 70’s film fan, you should be reading this book. Abbott and Gaylin’s story is brutal yet spot on. And Scott’s art captures the look and fashion of the era wonderfully. Search this one out people. I give it a 10 out of 10!

Time & Vine #2     IDW Publishing

Another hidden treasure being overlooked by the comic reading community. The concept of pulling out a bottle of wine and being transported back to the year the wine was made is both creative and new. All the characters are appealing from our main vino-drinking time travelers to the secondary characters. This book is worth the effort to search out! I give it a 9 out of 10.

Lookers Ember #1     Boundless Comics Group

Holy Moley! I thought the 90’s were over and done with?! Shand, Zanier, and Lugibihl channel the sprits of the old Eros line of comics and funnel them into a full color, better drawn (but still Adults Only) version. The women are still overtly sexy (and most of the time nude), the violence is still graphic, and the situations are definitely in need of some butt-kicking. Luckily, the women of Soho’s Best Private Investigations are up for the task. Most definitely for the more mature crowd but not a bad book. Stories are interesting and the art is good. But if your wife finds it, you’ve got some explaining to do! I give it a 7 out of 10.
