DC’S HAWK-GIRL SUMMER #1 DC COMICS
Point of order! Since when did we start spelling Hawkgirl with a hyphen? There was no hyphen when Hawkgirl made her debut after borrowing of Hawkman’s extra outfits in All-Star Comics #5 (June 1941) Why now? Maybe it’s because she had a big Hollywood appearance in the Superman movie. Can anyone say movie tie-in? I sure can, especially since Lobo just showed up in the Detective Comics Annual for 2026! Just shameless! And what’s worse is that even with some out of left field stories featuring Kid Eternity and Mr. Keeper, and the Shining Knight, this one falls shy of the mark. A mild bit of a fun read but not enough to re-read it a second time. Kind of a bummer considering all the talented creatives teams here. 5 out of 10 Grahams.
THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO #1 AMP COMICS
Oh sure, after a dozen or so crash landings, the humor sort of wore off. But as a comedy the show was standard 1980’s sitcom schtick. What made it last fondly in our memories is the drama aspect of it. The episode where Ralph and Bill discover they were not the first to be chosen to wear the suit. Or the episode, where the aliens return to give Ralph the last copy of the instrution manual for him only to lose it again while experimenting in shrinking. This is what made the series a classic. And it appears writers Tawnia McKiernan and Don Handfield are tapping into this. From Ralph’s first appearance beaming down to the Earth from the spaceship to his stopping of a truck, the drama of the show is on full display. This leads to a good news/bad news situation as much of the comedic elements are missing but we are presented with a storyline that is very well done. 7 out of 10 Grahams.
THE HORROR OF GODZILLA #1 IDW COMICS
Yet another Godzilla series from IDW. And another interesting concept that failed to make the grade. The world lies in ruins as Dr. Olivia Morrison faces a tribunal as she and her team may have woken Godzilla up (again). This time it was in the search for a new source of energy. But things went sideways and now Godzilla is up and pissed. But writers Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan are definitely going dark in tone hear. As green rain begins to desend near Godzilla and when it’s not melting flesh off people, it’s mutating them. Think Toxic Avenger meets Night of the Living Dead. But yet again, the question becomes is this a Godzilla story? Remove his name from the title and switch out the long shots of Godzilla in the backround with green lighting to anything else and does it take away from the story? Nope. This would make a perfectly acceptable story without the King of the Monsters. Just to make sure I wasn’t being biased, I let my friend and huge Godzilla fan Sly Hondo read it.He like Tristan Jones’s artwork and the apparent biological effects of being too close to Godzilla. So, I’ll give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
