IT’S HALLOWEEN AGAIN!!!

You know me. I love the Halloween season. Heck, my wife and I already set up our stuff in the house at the beginning of September. I just dig the vibe. I watch horror movies and read horror comics all year long. Yet it is a little more special during the season. With this entry I will not bore you with my memories of the old horror comics I have read in the past. This time I will stay in the present and give you some comics that are currently out to read this Halloween season.

Lately, a lot of the horror comics that are out now are anthologies. One of the, is a book called Hello Darkness. It has some of the biggest writers in the industry like Garth Ennis, James Tynion IV, Cullen Bunn, and R.L. Stine to name of few. Some of the stories are one-shots and some are serialized. You have a character named Darcia who is the cover mascot. The main cover always has Darcia on it but usually the B cover is Jenny Frison. The Frison covers are the creepiest covers that I have seen from her. In short the book has some fun stories with some cool covers.

Another anthology horror series to look at is the revived EC comics series from Oni Press. Like the original series from the 50s, they name their series different titles like Epitaphs from the Abyss, Catacomb of Torment, and Blood Type. They are just modernized versions of the old EC comics. They even have the “hosts” that introduce each story. They don’t quite have the same art as the old ones but the stories are still entertaining.

This book is not an anthology but a returning series. That series is Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. The first series has been collected in trade paperback and it is currently #6 on our Top 50 trade paperbacks. Yet they brought out a second series with the tag line Rite of Spring. The whole series is with anthropomorphic animals and serial killing. This book is not for the kiddies.

Another recurring series is the Universal Monsters series. They started with Dracula and then moved on to the Creature of the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein, and The Mummy. The current series is now the Invisible Man. I personally enjoy these because they are the same stories but told from different perspectives. Each monster series has different writers and artists. I feel the choices for art work well for the particular monsters.

Newer series aside, there are still some horror series continuing. Something is Killing the Children is still going strong. Department of Truth just came back from hiatus. Feral seems to have 9 lives. Stranger Things always seems to bring out a mini or two in between the seasons releasing…

I know this is not one of my best works. I apologize. I just hope I reached someone that will try a new horror book. Once again thank you for reading my ramblings.
