GODZILLA DESTROYS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #1

Yet another creative team gets a crack at a Marvel Godzilla and artist Javier Garron gets his choice of Marvel Characters. From an A-List of cameos to the heroes that the Fantastic 4 can call in, we have a good selection of heroes. We also have some humor from writer Gerry Duggan’s story. From Thor getting smacked stupid (and into orbit!) from Godzilla’s tail to Captain America trying to give Godzilla a strict talking to. But that also works against the story. When Godzilla decimates a Celestial, this is a major scare moment. But Reed Richards’ face is shown as a comedic “Oh sh*t” expression. And when Godzilla attacks the Baxter Building, his actions cause the Negative Zone Portal to shipt the upper third of the building including Reed, Sue and Captain America into the Zone, Captain Marvel’s pep talk to Johnny is badly timed and socially awkward. With a round two coming soon, our next team seems unlikely to do any better. Much like the scene of Captain America deflecting a full blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath right back at him with his shield. I’ll be the first to suspend some disbelief for the sake of enjoying the story but I’ve got to call BS on that hands down. Better than some of the Marvel Godzilla One-Shots but has definite problems. 7 out of 10 Grahams.

REDCOAT #13     IMAGE/GHOST MACHINE

The big finale! Redcoat vs the Northerner vs the Cobbler! The master plan expands and time goes all wonky again. A new crossover is set up and the next story arc as we finally catch up to the First Ghost incident. And while this arc ends on a rather touching note, I admit I’m a little unhappy with the ending. After spending all these issues getting to know and care about Simon Pure, the ending seems a little out of character. I won’t drop any spoilers here but if you have been following along with geoff Johns and Bryan Hitch’s magnum opus, let me know what you think. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

 WONDER WOMAN #23     DC COMICS

While I am always glad when a third or fourth tier super-villain from the past pops up, the return of Mouse Man is really confusing me. Showing up at the end of the last story arc, he blended right in. But this new chapter makes very little sense. Ironically, writer Tom King seemed to be able to call this one in as 80% of the dialog here consists of Mouse Man Knows. and Mice have ears. And while, I will give him credit for taking those two phrases and letting artist Daniel Sampere convey the emotions as people keep repeating those phrases. Fear, sorrow, anger all get through to the reader even though, the characters just keep repeating those words over and over again. I’m annoyed yet fascinated. 7 out 10 Grahams?
