Doc’s Reviews for the Week of 01/24/2024

FLASH #123 FACSIMILE EDITION DC COMICS

Shiny Cover, blank cover, regular cover. No one can dispute what writer Gardner Fox, Penciller Carmine Infinato, and inker Joe Giella created here. Only 19 issues into the new series, this creative team brought us the very first multidimensional crossover in comics. Accidentally vibrating at a different speed causing him to cross into what would go on to be called Earth 2, Barry Allen started a comic tradition that still goes on today. It could have been a time travel story with the modern Flash travelling back to the past to meet the Flash of the 1940’s but Fox was more creative then that. Realizing that no Silver Age hero story had brought up heroes that came before them, he chose to, in essence, create the multiverse. It’s so commonplace these days that no one blinks an eye but in July of 1961, this was mind-blowing. And while the tale pops up here and there over the past few decades, it’s always nice to see it in it’s original version with house ads (really craving a Tootsie Roll Ice Cream Bar while playing with my 150 piece Civil War soldier set!) To give it anything less then a 10 out of 10 Grahams would be blasphemy.

GHOST MACHINE #1     IMAGE/GHOST MACHINE COMICS

Showing definite promise, the almost overwhelming amount of creators who have teamed up for this special preview issue is dumbfounding! Geoff Johns! Peter J. Tomasi! Brad Meltzer! Bryan Hitch! … to name just a few! A creator owned group of new titles that will be starting up in April left me amazingly pleased. The sections I thought I wouldn’t like, I liked. The sections I thought I would like, I loved. Multiple chapters, multiple genres, multiple art styles are all working here. I am actually looking forward to seeing what happens in April. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

FEARLESS DAWN THE BOMB #3     ASYLUM PRESS

Steve Mannion continues to amuse with more schenanigans from our plucky duo. With the General breaking out of prison and on the girl’s trail for some payback, Prissy and Betty better don some black leather outfits and set some traps. Luckily, Prissy’s dad is there and he’s one touch hombre! Now we know where his daughter gets it from. With only one issue to go, I’m starting to miss her already. Definitely hijinx for everyone. 9 out of 10 Grahams.

BLACK HOPS KAMEN AMERICA #1     ANTARCTIC PRESS

The ladies of Kamen America are back and this time they’ve got guests! As Task Force 22114 recruites Kamen America and Kamen Comet to foil the evil plans of Apex Moth and Vermillion! As always, the unusual Americanized Anime art style by Timothy Lim is taylor-made for Mark Pellegrini’s story. And while not on any sort of regular release schedual, this title is worth keeping your eye out for. I give this installment an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
