BONUS REVIEW by John Robinson

Once upon a time, Comic Book Annuals were primarily compromised of REPRINTS of previous exceptional issues/stories. A way for fans to pick up some good reads they may have missed at a bargain price. Then Marvel Comics came on the scene and did something completely different. Starting with Fantastic Four Annual #1 and then followed by this Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, Marvel gave you the EVENT comic. Unlike the 'events' of the 1980s to present day - this was a 72 page comic telling a much bigger story than the monthlies could handle and all the by the REGULAR CREATIVE TEAMS. Lee & Kirby, and Lee & Ditko giving you a memorable book with no reprints! It's seriously been all downhill from here. Not that there haven't been fantastic Annuals produced since then (there have) - it's just that this company peaked out of the gate. I daresay that Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 may be the great comic Annual ever produced. But $7.99 you cry! Outrageous. Well, not really. When this Annual originally came out, it was 25 cents. The monthly was 12 cents. That's more than double. An Amazing Spider-Man monthly is now $3.99 so $7.99 is right in line. And boy has this never looked better. BRIGHT CLEAN SHINY paperstock that beautifully reproduces all of Ditkos line work, while still giving you the same feel and aesthetic of holding a 72 page comic in your hand (Omnibuses are nice, but there's something to be said for the feel of an individual comic). If you've never read it, you're in for a treat. It's fan service at it's highest and a classic story by two of Marvels best storytellers at the peak of their creativity. Please enjoy!
