There’s so many amazing comics out there and so many amazing colors used to bring comics to life. So, join me today as we go through a reading rainbow if you will.
To start us off we have red. The color of passion, fury, warmth, and danger. There’s so many comics we could choose from, the tragic and brooding Red Hood, to the Red Lanterns, to the mysterious out of this world story of Red Book. But for today we are going for a “solo” comic run and that is ‘Red Hulk’! General Ross is a prisoner of Doom, can he and the group of misfit prisoners around him get free? And what will it cost to do so? Leaping into the One World Under Doom event with this 10-issue series is something you must af “ford” if you are a fan of General Ross.
Moving on from the world of superheroes, orange brings us a character who is more likely to grow from eating too much lasagna than to grow from rage. In this new mini-series the world’s most iconic orange cat is back and cuter than ever. ‘Baby Garfield’ is here to learn, get into trouble, and hopefully survive Mondays. With author Grace Ellis (Lumberjanes) and artist Asia Simone (Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur: Wreck & Roll) this series is fun for the whole family. Keep an eye out for issues three and four coming soon!
Looks like we’re getting a call now from Hell’s Kitchen. Yellow? Oh, it’s Matt Murdock in the iconic ‘Daredevil Yellow’ run. Made by Eisner Award winning team Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, join them as Matt’s first years as Daredevil unfolds. Yellow is known for joy, anxiety, energy, and caution see all of this in the six-issue series.
Now I know some characters that are bound to be envious of my choice for green but just like red there’s too many iconic comics to choose from. Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Martian Manhunter, She-Hulk, and two members of The Guardians of the Galaxy. But after his much-awaited return how could I choose anyone other than Swamp Thing more specifically ‘Swamp Thing 1989’. Swamp Thing is moving through time (in more ways than one) and the legendary lost issues have found their way to print. Join Swamp Thing on this epic tale three decades in the making and be sure to ask your local Graham Cracker staff for the very beginning of this epic run and join Swamp Thing on even more adventures.
Now if you know me and my love for X-Men comics you know it’s no mystery who I’ve chosen for blue. No not Mystique or even Nightcrawler but Dr. Hank McCoy aka Beast. What would later be the title of one of my favorite X-Men The Animated Series episodes and is the title of my favorite Disney princess movie ‘Beauty and the Beast’ the comic is a must read. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ follows Beast and Dazzler as this unlikely team-up turns into a romantic escapade. Featuring characters like Dr. Doom and Wonder Man you won’t want to miss it.
For purple we’re going back to all-ages and to one of my favorite graphic novel series. ‘Teen Titans: Raven’ tells a modern origin story for the young team member. The start of a series with amazing art by Gabriel Picolo and writing by Kami Garcia it brings the Titans into a new era. With six books each following a Titan or the team they are a great read for any age. Purple brings fear, calm, and magic which might be why it’s the perfect color for Raven Roth.
While we have a beautiful round up of comics here, I think we need a comic that encapsulates all of the rainbow. And there’s one new comic that has a rainbow on every issue ‘Absolute Martian Manhunter’! Probably one of my favorites of the Absolute series, the colors are exactly what one thinks of when one hears rainbow. Not only is it colorful but it has pages where when you hold it up to the light something is revealed. In a way like how holding up a prism to the light reveals a rainbow.
