Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #3 (2008)

$4.50
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS Penciled by DAVID LAFUENTE Cover by MARK BROOKS & RICHARD ISANOVE

The relationship between Peter Parker and Mary Jane is one of the most iconic and popular romances in all of comics -- and in this very special issue by series writer Brian Michael Bendis (SECRET INVASION), and red-hot artist David Lafuente (HELLCAT), that relationship delves into an area never before seen in any Spider-Man comic! Destined to be one of the most controversial issues of the year!

Ultimate Spider-Man has always been one of the best books that Marvel puts out. But the annuals always seem to trump even the regular series issues. The past two annuals have been high water marks for the series, so this third one had a lot to live up to. And, while not exceeding expectations, they were definitely met, at least. Peter and MJ have reached that point in their relationship where things start getting awkward and weird, especially for teenagers, when the big “IT” is brought up. And Pete’s a little confused by MJ’s reaction, particularly since she brought it up in the first place. Good thing there’s a new baddie on the scene so he can bust some heads instead of driving himself crazy over it. The writing from Bendis is exactly what we’ve come to expect from him on this series and the artwork from relative newcomer David Lafuente (who you may have caught on art duties on “Patsy Walker: Hellcat) is a very good match for Spider-Man. His art is fluid and, I hate using the term (but I use it with the utmost praise) cartoony, and fits the tone of the story to a tee. His backgrounds are beautifully detailed and his figure work is full of life and vitality. He seems to be able to hold his own with such USM veterans as Bagley, Immonen and Brooks.
I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams
