GRAHAMTAGONISM!!

graham-tag-o-nism / gram-TAG-uh-niz-uhm
–noun

1. an active hostility or opposition, in regards to comic book reviews, between unfriendly or conflicting employees of Graham Crackers Comics.

2. a relationship between two species of simultaneous reviews in which the individuals of each opinion adversely affect the other, as in competition.

3. a weekly on-line comic book review column by
W. DAL BUSH, and PATRICK BROWER in which their opinions take precedence over yours.

W.DAL: Hey, it’s another week, and another Grahamtagonism from me and Patrick. As has become a tradition around here, one of us isn’t here, and this week it’s Patrick. So instead of faking Pat’s review for a week, I decided I’d call up one of our alternates to cover this week. Well? Say hello!

SCABS: Howdy, y’all! Ah’m Scabs Maguffin! Ah’ll be yer guide through the twisty canyons of this here comic review, along with mah good friend, that sidewinder W. Dal! Ah’m as excited as a cricket on a lecture circuit!

W.DAL: Uh, okay. So, Scabs, what’s… what’s your deal? Why do you talk like Rogue, anyway?

SCABS: Aw, c’mon, pard’ner! Ah’m about the rootenest, tootenest comic reviewin’ cowboy east of the Rio Grande! Or is that north? Heck, ah don’t know! Ah’ve been too busy readin’ comics to do much geographizin’. There’s more fun comics out there than barbers in April!

W.DAL: Sure. Man, you’re already giving me a headache. Let’s just get this moving. What’ve you been reading, Scabs?

SCABS: Well, this here New Avengers Illuminati mini-series has got me hollerin’ for more. Ah ain’t been this keen on a Bendis comic since ‘bout an age. Ah guess when ya get a great fella like Jimmy Cheung drawin’ a great big group on a crazy mission to space, it’s hard not to love it like the wind loves a latte. Ya get me, bud?

W.DAL: Not really, Scabs, no. I mean, leaving aside your busted similes, I didn’t really like Illuminati at all. Well, that’s not totally true. As always I liked Jim Cheung, I’m with you there. I’ve been a fan of his for years but the rest of this? Not a fan. No way. I just can’t get my head around the basic idea of the Illuminati. To retroactively but a group like this into every major Marvel event for the last 30 years? Despite the fact that any number of stories directly contradict the idea that they worked together? C’mon! I can’t buy into something like that.

SCABS: Dang, Ah think you’re as crazy as a whisker in a distillery! A gang like the Illuminati makes perfect sense! Who’s to say that they ain’t been together for years? They’re a SECRET group! It ain’t a secret if they talk about it durin’ big team-ups, buckaroo! An’ comics pull retcon stuff more often than a junebug buys a speedboat! So why give so much guff to this book?

W.DAL: It’s because… speedboat? Uh, it’s because the whole idea of the Illuminati is real simple: these heroes got together to share information to help make sure that a major event like the Kree-Skrull War never happened again. Except, despite the leaders of the FF, X-Men, Avengers, Defenders and more involved, CRAZY STUFF HAPPENS CONSTANTLY in Marvel books, most big enough to make the Kree-Skrull War look like a back-up in an Annual. THAT’S a comparison, buster.

SCABS: Yep, that was so right purty wording. Prettier than a senator on a tightrope, yes sir. But that don’t change the fact that you’re as wrong as an ice cream cone during Earth Day. So, they got together to make things better. That don’t mean they gotta succeed. Hell, if they did you wouldn’t never get another Marvel comic! You’re a smart fella, ain’t you never considered the inevitability of conflict and the fruitlessness inherent within all continuous fiction and whatnot? Heck, that’s like gettin’ a hula hoop without drivin’ to church; it’s plum stupid!

W.DAL: Well, be that as it may, it makes this team look so far beyond incompetent that I’m afraid for every team they’ve ever been on. And besides all that, I just don’t like prequel stories. Since they take place in the past, there’s no real suspense. I mean, you know that every character on the cover to Illuminati #1 gets through the issue, so it’s hard to get emotionally invested in their struggle, you know? And before you give some “that’s as dense as a hiccup in a marching band” song-and-dance, yes, I realize that most of those characters are never in any real jeopardy, but if a story’s set in present day, at least there’s the ILLUSION of danger. Here, nothing.

SCABS: Buddy, Ah’m all broken up you couldn’t just sit back an’ enjoy a fun comic like this without gettin’ all wrapped up in nit-picky nonsense. That’s sadder than a muskrat doin’ long-division. It really is. But if you can’t, that just leaves more good, fun books for me.

W.DAL: Tch. You’re welcome to it. I’d rather read a great book like the Iron Man/Captain America: Casualties Of War one-shot that manages to use, not contradict or shoehorn, the entirety of Marvel history in a way that honors it AND tells a good story, not one or the other. Or neither, like this one.
6 Grahams for Illuminati. What d’you give it, cowboy?

SCABS: I had more fun readin’ this than a walrus has on a tannin’ bed.
8 Grahams fer some good, ol’fashioned Avengers action an’ drama.

W.DAL: Yikes. Let’s not do this again, Tex. Get on your horse, ride out of here and don’t come back, “y’hear”?

SCABS: We’ll see, pard’ner. We’ll see.

W.DAL: No, we won’t. I really don’t want you back.

SCABS: We’ll see, pard’ner. We’ll see.

W.DAL: No, we won’t. What, did you hit your head?

SCABS: Couple times. * crack* H’YAH! AWAY, BOY! H’YAH!
