Each column we pick a book from LAST WEEK to discuss in depth.  This way we don't spoil anything for you because you've had a week to read the book in question. Right? Right!

W. DAL:
Alright, 52. In favor of the millions of hack articles from various magazines, websites, blogs, podcasts, suicide letters, what-have-you that need to have "52" coverage include the number 52 (52 reasons to read! 5.2 questions!) I propose the following format for this week's Grahamtagonism: 37 things we liked about 52 #1. Why 37? F' them, that's why.

PATRICK: #1 The gorgeous JG Jones cover. The design, the muted background colors, the angle of the principals. All of it good. Wait, does this count as one reason or 3?

PATRICK: Sets up the theme of the missing characters as well as letting us know the new stars.

W. DAL:
#2 Skeets! Skeets skeets skeets! A character who's as cool as his name is disturbing!

PATRICK: And a cool new design for Skeets as well!

W. DAL:
Yeah. He's a rocket ship from the future full of funny and powered by cuteness! Like a Hello Kitty stuffed with nitroglycerin.

PATRICK: #3 Keith Giffen doing breakdowns. A master back at what brought him to the dance. Having him do layouts will make the whole series cohesive.

W. DAL:
#4 Speaking of Giffen... THAT 9-PANEL QUESTION PAGE! Oh my God! That completely validated 20 years of on-again-off-again usage of the Charlton characters.

PATRICK: Yeah, I've been looking to see who reps Joe Bennett 'casue I wanna own that page. Such a good page this is also #5.

W. DAL:
#6 Suicidal Elongated Man. Doesn't that just say it all?

PATRICK: #7 Specifically, the panel with the gun in his mouth. Seriously thought he was gonna do it. Hmmmm... reminds me of The Divorce Gun song "Sunny Day."

W. DAL:
#8 Black Adam rips that dude's limb off, then says "You have THREE more chances to tell me who sent you." Hardcore! I hear he's also instituting secret wiretaps.

PATRICK: #9 Speaking of Black Adam being a bad@$$, how about Kahndaq taking over the Themyscrian Embassy? Nice touch.

PATRICK: #10 The hot dog vendor cart called "Hot Dididogs." A refrence to DC VP Dan Didio? I hear he loves the red hots! And the Mets, but that doesn't really factor into this.

W. DAL:
Taking two turns, huh? Fine! Take THIS:

W. DAL: #11,12,13,14,15,16 The six characters from Seven Soldiers that showed up in the group scene! Nice to see this group stick around One Year Later. Where's my ongoing?

PATRICK: Oh yeah? Well -minus one for the mysterious absence of the 7th Soldier. Guess we know who bites it in SS#1? *cough* *XXXXXXXXXX* *cough* So we're back to #16.

W. DAL:
Damn! I CAN'T believe you blew that surprise!

W. DAL: I guess that "SS" stands for Spoil Sport, huh? Spoily?

W. DAL: #16 Steel goes to France! FINALLY! Someone at DC's been reading my fanfic.

PATRICK: #17 The new-attitude Booster Gold. "...sometimes even super-heroes get thirsty."

W. DAL:
#18 The original-attitude Booster Gold! "...sometimes even super-heroes get thirsty."

PATRICK: "Must... must be something in my eye."

PATRICK: #19 Zauriel being alive even though we saw him die...?

W. DAL:
Dude, every time Zauriel dies he gets reincarnated. Sounds like God's a Buddhist...

PATRICK: #20 Going back to Booster Gold, him elbowing Clark Kent in the face and bloodying his nose.

W. DAL:
#20 The end of Steel Girl. I always hated Natasha. It's such an untrustworthy name, after all. Look at the Ultimates. Or, you know, Rocky & Bullwinkle.

W. DAL: NO YOU DON'T!

W. DAL: GET OFF MY NUMBER! NUMBER HOG! NUMBER HOG! NMUBRE HGO! BDFGDF FDA!

PATRICK: #20 Dal freaking out during the 52 #1 Grahamtagonism.

W. DAL: 
#A BILLION -- PAT IS DUMB!

W. DAL: ...sorry, what? I hit my head on the monitor. Did I type anything?

W. DAL: 
All I remember is some number thief thieving my number, then... hmm. Nothing. Anyway.

W. DAL: 
#24 Bart Allen! I totally want to see more of his character. How the hell did THAT happen?

PATRICK: I've always disliked Greg Rucka's take on Rene Montoya, but #25 is "...it points up, you idiots..."

W. DAL: 
#26 Greg Rucka's take on Montoya, actually. It's fun to watch a writer tear down a character and build them up again. It sounds like Bendis' Alias, which we all know was his best book. Sorry, BESIDES New Avengers. Obviously...

PATRICK: #27 The ease in which all 4 writers flow into one story but remain individual voices. For example the way that Rucka obviously is writing the Montoya stuff (see #25 and #26, above).

W. DAL: 
#28 A new issue next week! Next. Week. That still hasn't sunk in yet, I think.

PATRICK: #29 A mere $2.50 for a cubic ton of action in the same month as all other DC and Marvel books jump to $2.99.

W. DAL: 
#30 I like cheese.

PATRICK: #31 Joe Bennett. Never what you'd call an A-List talent, he really gets the job done, and done well. And I hear HE also likes cheese.

W. DAL: 
#32 God, I can't believe I'm actually typing this... ugh. Joe Bennett. There, happy? I give credit to him for being able to take killer direction from Keith Giffen, while not losing his own style. I'm sure we'd all prefer Ed McGuiness or Adam Hughes were drawing this, but for a weekly book that's just not possible. So, for what they needed, DC got a good guy. Just please, don't have him do his own breakdowns.

PATRICK: #33 And a shout out to an inker I've never heard of before (that I can remember) Ruy Jose. Way to sling that ink, Ruy!

W. DAL: 
You lousy inkers, always sticking to your own kind. Then how about... #34 Alex Sinclair did his usual stellar job coloring this monstrosity.

PATRICK: Alex Sinclair, a colorist who doesn't feel the need to use every color on every page, Chris Sotomayor!!!

PATRICK: #35 The beautifully talented Assistant Edits of the lovely Jann Jones!

W. DAL: 
#36 Hmm, sort of running out of stuff to mention. Uh... "Lost" is good again? That's all I got, man.

PATRICK: #37... VERONICA MARS!

PATRICK: No, no, how about #37 being the merciful end of this Grahamtagonism?

PATRICK:
  
8 Grahams for a very promising start to an amazingly ambitious idea.

W. DAL: 
  
Agreed. 8 Grahams for what's got the potential to be the breakout book of the next year. So, there you have it! 37 good things, some of them even about "52". Now hurry to Graham Crackers and buy the next issue, since it's probably out by the time you're reading this. And if you've got access to a time machine, you should go get the rest of the series. And a bagel. That'd be good. Man, I always write these hungry...
