Is it wrong that I don’t want Superman back in his own book?
Blasphemous as that may sound to some readers, Joshua Williamson has done the impossible: made Superboy Prime someone to root for. He’s not quite a hero yet, but he’s someone trying to do his absolute best to right the wrongs of his past and prove he has what it takes to be the person he wants to be. That’s a very human struggle, and the best superhero stories are ones that center around such things. At the same time, it has a metatextual layer that only a character like Prime can deliver, speaking not just to superheroes, but to comic books as a whole and why we love them.
It’s the perfect balance of style and substance, and it’s honestly the most I’ve enjoyed a Superman title since the end of Tomasi and Jurgens tenures during Rebirth, and I don’t want that to stop just because Big Blue is on his way back from… whatever it was he was doing at the end of DC KO. At time of writing, Superman has three ongoing titles, and if Prime can’t helm at least one of them, surely there’s room for a fourth...
