Reviews

Is this an alternate Marvel Universe book? Are we Iffing a What? There's no way to tell yet, but Cap is just out of the ice, in a world of cell phones, floating screens, and the Taliban. There's a lot to like about the start of Chip Zdarsky's, but clarity about place and time aren't among them.

Where do Merry Marvelites get clarity? Some places that currently seem up for grabs- Hitler was bad and its more than ok to say so, autocrats need to be stopped, leaders who take away rights from people aren't leading, and moral people stand in opposition to oppression instead of in line w/ it.

Zdarsky's take on Steve is solid, patriotic, and looking for the way to apply that in a world he doesn't have a handle on yet. Valerio Schiti has clear enough visual storytelling, but the Cap pages stand out as clearly having more effort put towards fully finishing them. Might I suggest that a quality inker helps most pencillers?

Appearances by Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, and a pervasive shadow of Doom add to the enjoyment. I'll be reaaallly curious to see how the matter of time plays out and if this is 'our' Cap, but the team here is off to a solid start that anyone can pick up and enjoy w/out knowing 65 years of Marvel history.
