Series starts May 2026 Marvel
Recently, I was talking with a coworker about a video game (Clair Obscur: Expedition 33) that he praised for "reminding him how games used to make him feel."
I bring this up because this book reminds me of how Marvel used to make me feel. For a few years now, I've been disillusioned with the direction Marvel has taken with its characters, to the point where late last year the Marvel Universe was simply unrecognizable to me. That's not to say there haven't been any good books from them, far from it, only that there haven't been any great books.
Until now.
Avengers Armageddon feels like something that would have fit right into Marvel's lineup in the second half of the 2000s, the era that began with Civil War and ended with Siege. In other words, a glorious era. It's a story which is topical in its themes without being too on the nose, with lots of intrigue, action, and moving parts illustrated beautifully by Diaz and Alpizar, all of which makes the Marvel Universe feel alive. And to top it off, Chip Zdarsky demonstrates something that I personally treasure, which is the art of character voice. Dialogue is distinct and compliments the visuals, making characters feel like individuals with personality rather than vehicles for conveying plot points.
All of this is to say that if you like Marvel, if you're a true believer as Stan Lee used to say, you should be reading this. The pendulum forever swings back and forth between the Big Two, and if this is anything to go by, it might just be about to swing back Marvel's way.
