VERY FINE/NEAR MINT

Where did the space heroes go to die? A major new series by Warren Ellis, the writer who reinvented science fiction in comics, in the alternate-world style of the award-winning Ministry Of Space and Aetheric Mechanics, a retro-punk "future of the past" where spaceships still belched smoke and arguments were still settled with laser pistols. Grounded space pilot Mary Raven has come to the interzone settlement in the middle of Ignition City, Earth's last spaceport, to recover the effects of her dead father - or so people think. Mary really wants to know how he died, and who did it. And if she finds that out, she's going to spoil the rackets of a great many people, and maybe uncover a deadly secret that's worth ray-gunning her down to protect!
Date Available: 04/22/2009
BONUS REVIEW by Megan Byrd - CH

If issue one left you wanting more, then this will definitely deliver! Ignition City finds it feet in this issue filled with intrigue, action, and pacing that utilizes the comic book medium. Warren Ellis has an affinity for serializing graphic novels – a practice that does not always do a series justice. (If it’s a graphic novel make it a graphic novel!) When characters make passing references to alien worlds and space travel, it feels like a genuine attempt to show more about the characters, where as in the first issue, similar comments felt like shortcuts to explain the Retro-Future world Ellis has created. Romantic interludes with asteroid gypsies? Tell me more! What at first seemed like a muddled attempt to recycle Ellis’ previous concepts (Ministry of Space anyone?) has turned into an intriguing murder mystery. Characters over concept, story over circumstance. I’m sold!
I give it 7 out of 10 Grahams
