Anna Mercury #5 (2008)

$3.99
VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
By Warren Ellis & Facundo Percio
Warren Ellis' seductively mysterious Anna Mercury has teased and tormented with her secrets for long enough, it's time to answer all the burning questions of this all-new color series! Things have gone from bad, to worse, to condition horribly wrong! Anna is back in New Ataraxia, with a last-ditch mission to stop the entire society from committing suicide. That sounds easy enough, but she's got to do it without them finding out whose fault their condition really is. Because, if they do, no-one will be safe! A high-octane blend of The Shadow, Tomb Raider, retropunk science fiction and 21st century Weird Pulp Action, Anna Mercury is a headlong adventure serial about a beautiful and mysterious spy-adventurer who is not what she seems! Anna Mercury will be a series of mini-series, starting with this five issue color series that features art by all-new talent Facundo Percio.

Red-headed, tight suited, Anna likes action. Avatar Press (published in Illinois) likes to have an edge on their comics; in this case, Warren Ellis scripts an action sequence that goes through the roof. It’s rough, meant for Mature Readers, and the first four pages are the sharpest bit of action and story telling in the comic (and in many comics, too). In those pages, it’s patient, it lets the action seep through, it explains…and then it rushes, going from an unbelievable ending of a car ride (the artist didn’t transition well between the panels), to unfathomable tension at the end (Ellis drops a few explanations). This issue concludes a five-issue story. I like the idea, a bit of The Matrix (in terms of a hero visiting a separate place that needs saving) meets Tomb Raider, but patient, carefully crafted tales are still crucial, and Ellis misses here in key places.
I give it 5 out of 10 Grahams
