The original movie was out for a year, with reports of people seeing it 10, 20, even 40 times, before my parents took me to see it. Now, decades, and many, many viewings later, the enthusiasm faded. Aspects of the series did it in. For me, it’s disingenuous that warfare is shown so clinically, so…efficient. And narrow minded that all the Jedi’s are men, all the soldiers, men, and even, it seems, every bystander…a man. Yes, the Empire terrifies, like the Nazi Regime, demonstrating the destructiveness of totalitarian power, with its cold dismissal of life, of its worship of anger. But so clean, warfare, and a galaxy filled mostly with men. So here I am, with my first issue of Legacy…and it’s powerful. Ostrander highlights the best of Star Wars. Legacy takes place far after Luke is gone, and the epic battle for the Empire still rages. This issue, called Leviathan, part 2 of two parts, follows a lone Jedi teacher as he battles a monstrosity the Empire has created, led by a Darth, all for the survival of a water planet. It brings out the best of Star Wars, even as it shrouds its shortcomings. Great art, great story telling…Highly recommended. I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams VERY FINE/NEAR MINT
