The Ultimate theme, from Marvel, has brought us this hybrid comic, one that tries to fill in the gaps for characters like Magneto, Wolverine, Nick Fury, and others. I’ve bought very few Origin books prior, but this series caught my eye. In the first two issues. it explained how Nick Fury could do the “super” human things that he did, and offered additional initial touch points about mutants. In this issue, Part 3, we see the first meeting between Xavier and Magneto, with Magneto’s team of mutants, including the Blob and Scarlet Witch, lurking in the background. Bendis writes well, though the book jumps too much between time periods, and Butch Guice’s art is a ruffled at the edges—great, for this type of series. I liked it, and it’s a good series for those who wonder what the Ultimates, and even Marvel, is all about.
I give it 7 out of 10 Grahams
