In all honesty, I have never read Joe Hill's work on any kind of regular basis. With a new #1, I figured this would be the time. But it's not my cup of tea. The subject matter is uncomfortable at best and with the exception of the VFW scene (I've drunk with those guys back in the days.) there is no moment where the tension is cut. There is no one in this book (with the exception of the VFW drunk, Glen)that is even likeable. Now, that is not to say this is a bad book. Not being a reader of Hill's stuff, this might be exactly what his fans expect. I'm just saying that this is not for the uninitiated.
