When I first heard that the ICE CREAM MAN creative team of W. Maxwell Prince & Martin Morazzo were getting to do DEADMAN at DC Comics, I thought 'What a great pairing of creation and creators!'. And I still feel that way, it's just that my expectations might have been too high.
It's a perfectly solid DEADMAN tale with some great art from Martin Morazzo, I think I was just expecting a little more Junji Ito type creep outs than I got.
This creative matching also resonnated with me the biggest difference between MARVEL & DC today. Marvel has become the stagnant DC COMICS of the 1960s. The creative teams are fairly interchangable at Marvel without anyone standing out as a unique voice in a drowning field of books. This era at DC, reminds me of the 1980s DC that took a chance with Mike Baron & Kelly Jones doing Deadman. It wasn't NEAL ADAMS Deadman and it wasn't even the safe Jose Luis Garcia Lopezs DEADMAN, it was radically different, and for that reason alone I give this book a RECOMMENDATION!
Not all mainstream books need to look, read and feel the same, and when a company takes a swing like this, you just gotta support it!
