Years in the making, this is the true story of writer Peter Calloway's grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930's. Unable to get work at any Chicago hospitals because he was Black, and unable to secure a loan from a bank to start his own practice because he was Black, he turned to another source of money in Prohibition-era Chicago: the Mafia, run by none other than Al Capone. As Calloway himself says, 'On the one hand, his story represents the promise of Ameri-ca. On the other hand, it shows the worst of it.'

BONUS REVIEW by Kevin Healy

Shadow Doctor is the true story of a prohibition era whiskey runner turned physician. That's it? There's gotta be a twist right? There is. He was black, in the 30's, and completely unable to be hired for legitimate medical work by 'respectable' institutions.

He worked for the mob, you say? I wonder if they'd need a qualified medical professional for any reason during that era?

Peter Calloway's script breaks the beats out in a well paced fashion, moving between multiple timelines with ease. The art by Georges Jeanty is looser than his work on Buffy or Serenity (maybe shot from pencils?). It is effective in multiple eras here, and its nice to see him again. The backmatter pages are mandatory in this one. Recommended.

I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams
