TITLE: THE LEGEND OF GRIMJACK Vol. 1
PUBLISHER: IDW
TV/MOVIE Comparison: Pirates of the Caribbean meets Samurai Jack meets Scanners
Cynosure: The nexus of all realities with ever-shifting dimensions. One street, technology reigns. Next block over, only magic works, etc., etc. John Gaunt was an orphaned kid raised in The Pit, a cockfight arena for kids where you only live if you win. Now he’s all growed up and a private mercenary and he’s not a very nice man. You got the creds, he gives the blood—or takes it. Originally published by First Comics in the 1980’s, Grimjack is one of my all-time favorite characters, period. John Ostrander’s gritty, live-or-die characterization is beautifully rendered by then virtual newcomer Timothy Truman. No matter what else these guys have ever done in their long comic book careers, this is their white whale. And it holds up so well now over 20 years later. This first book collects all the Grimjack appearances from Starslayer: The Legend of the Jolly Roger before Grimmer got his own, well-deserved book. Useless trivia note: This book was printed off of existing copies of Starslayer and I gave IDW one of the books they used for the reproduction. My personal copy was destroyed so that we all could share this genius comic book reading experience--it’s that good!
