Mark Grayson thinks his life is going pretty well: he’s getting ready to graduate from high school, he has a steady (if unglamorous) job, and, if predictions hold up, he’ll be getting superpowers soon (owing to his father’s off-planet origins). Then his powers show up, and the fun begins.
Invincible is both Mark’s superhero alter-ego and the name of his story. He’s been gifted with the standard “strong, invulnerable, flying guy” power set, and he puts it to good use defending his hometown from threats such as his insane physics teacher. His father is Omni-Man, Earth’s most powerful hero, and they go on the occasional father/son team-up, including a meeting with the Guardians of the Globe, a group of heroes in league to bring justice to America and the rest of the world. It all sounds pretty great, right? It is, right up until the moment a terrible secret is revealed which changes the way Mark looks at the world forever.
Robert Kirkman has an obvious love for early Marvel superhero stories, as shown by his excellent handle on how everyteen Mark thinks and acts, his reasons for becoming a hero, and his reasons for staying a hero. Walker, and (separately) Ottley do a fine job rendering Mark’s world with a minimum of unnecessary embellishment, keeping things nicely clear.
Invincible: The Ultimate Collection includes the first 13 issues of Invincible, plus assorted sketches and background material offering insights into the creative process. There is another trade paperback collecting subsequent adventures in Invicible’s world, with a fifth one the way.
For fantastic old-fashioned superheroics, Invincible can’t be beat!
